Though much of the recent reportage about the St. Regis Monarch Beach in Dana Point has been about the popular luxury resort’s financial troubles, we found at least one bright spot, economically speaking: the new $39, three-course prix fixe menu at Michael Mina’s Stonehill Tavern restaurant.

The budget menu is available Wednesday-Sunday (every night that the restaurant itself is open), and each night features a simple, hearty main course like Wednesday’s fish and chips, Thursday’s Kobe steak frites with roasted baby carrots, Friday’s cedar-plank salmon with potatoes and bacon vinaigrette, and Saturday’s roast prime rib with twice-baked potato.

The starter and desserts change up each night too. On Wednesday’s you’ll get a potato-corn chowder to start with smoky bacon and squash blossom, then for dessert, there’s a root beer float with sassafras ice cream and chocolate chip cookies. Sunday’s supper begins with a nicoise salade, continues with seafood stew, and ends with a traditional hot fudge sundae topped with toasted almonds.

This special isn’t for picky eaters since you don’t really get a choice of courses, but if you are looking for a bargain during your stay at the resort, or are just stopping through while visiting some of California’s prettiest coastline, the deal at Stonehill Tavern is a great way to enjoy one of Orange County’s fanciest resorts at a fraction of the cost.

The restaurant is open Sunday, Wednesday and Thursday from 6:00-9:00pm, and Friday and Saturday from 5:30-10:00pm. Rates at the St. Regis start at $425 in September.

This is fantastic!

The food at Stonehill Tavern is fantastic, and I'm sure this will be no exception.  My husband and I have been several times, and this may get us down to Dana Point even more often!  Hopefully on a Saturday...roast prime rib?  Yum !
