Lake Tahoe is one of those mountainous Northern California (way North) destinations that is popular during the summer, but really bustling with activity during wintertime, what with the chance for visitors to channel their inner Jonny Moseley on the slopes.

The hotel scene in Tahoe, though, conjures up images of buffet breakfasts at Harrah's, though with resorts like Plumpjack nearby, there isn't a total lack of luxury.

But when The Ritz Carlton Highlands moves into town you'd better believe that the upscale stakes will be raised, which is what will happen when a Lake Tahoe location opens on December 9th of this year, a little later than the original fall opening that was announced.

Having spoken with a friend who's already seen hotel renderings, this Ritz location will deliver plenty of the over-the-top plush amenities we've come to expect from the brand. A preview of its exterior draws comparisons to The Shining's fictional Overlook Hotel, only without the horrific undertones.

We've already reported on some of the things you can expect once the bow is cut, like a 17,000-square-foot spa and fitness center and a restaurant by chef Traci des Jardins of San Francisco's Jardinière.

Adding to that list are fireplaces in every guest room and suite, water and woods-themed treatments at the spa, and Club Level service for high rollers who want private check-in and check-out and a concierge at their beck and call. So, you know, it's business as usual for the Ritz.

The hotel is taking reservations now, with rooms starting at $299 per night. Start saving, snow bunnies.

Lake Tahoe

Our family takes our winter vacation in Lake Tahoe every year. Most times we will stay at a Tahoe Motel that is centrally located. But - We are ready to splurge though on what will probably be the premier of the Lake Tahoe Resorts - the Ritz Carlton. Hope that it is open by the end of 2010.
