While most of the activities of the Coors Light San Diego Rodeo, put on by the Golden State Gay Rodeo Association's Greater San Diego Chapter but open to all sexual orientations, will take place Sept. 11 to 13 at the Lakeside Rodeo Grounds, cowboys and cowgirls will relax and rest their hats at the Handlery Hotel and Resort, the official host hotel.

The 21st annual rodeo's competitive events—such as the traditional bull riding and roping along with more colorful contests like steer decorating, goat dressing and the wild drag race (where cowboys dress in drag and ride a steer)—all will go down at Lakeside. But the more social happenings will be at the Handlery. On Sept. 11, you can trade your chaps for a bathing suit during the hotel's free pool party from noon to 6 p.m. Then on Sept. 12, slip into your cowboy boots for some country dancing at the hotel from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. for $15, and if you're feeling lucky, pony up to the Handlery's casino night from 8 to 11 p.m. The rodeo will end on Sept. 13 at the Mission Valley hotel with an awards ceremony. About 15,000 people saddle up to the rodeo's weekend of events each year.

Rodeo attendees can rope in a $98 per day rate (we can't help all the cowboy slang, partner), with a two-night minimum, at the hotel. Rooms usually go for $209 a night. To book the rodeo rate, call (619) 298-0511 or go online and use the promotional code "Rodeo."
