HotelChatter Readers Share Summer Vacation Stories (Pt. I)

Call us vacation voyeurs, or maybe we’re just nosy. Regardless, we put out an APB to our dear HotelChatter.com readers for the first installment of "How I Spent My Summer Vacation" and you replied in spades. Thank you. Here’s a post-play hotel report from seven of you valued readers and jetsetters.

(If you haven't joined in on the conversation yet, tell us where you stayed this summer, and what you loved/loathed about your hotel experiences.)

· "I stayed at Point Lookout Resort in Northport, ME. The first time this place has been open to the public. It's a former MBNA Bank corporate retreat on 400 acres in the Mid-Coast region of Maine. All accommodations are private cabins, but I describe them as 'business casual' because they're decorated like a luxury hotel room with leather chairs, polished pine floors/walls/ceilings and screened porches. My favorite parts: the private beach (and the grassy path leading to it, past an old orchard full of birds when I was there), the walking trails through the shady woods/over a stream, and the Summit which has a panoramic view of Penobscot Bay and the islands. I bet it will be gorgeous in the fall. Lots of local places to explore: shops and galleries in Camden, also great restaurants and lobster shacks. Best of all—we paid just $175 a night for a cabin to ourselves.

· “We stayed at our favorite resort, The Terra Cotta Inn in Palm Springs, CA. It is a clothing optional resort and this is at least our 14th time there. It feels like we are seeing old friends instead of staying at a resort. The staff is wonderful.”
Kira

· "In June, my husband and I took at trip to northeastern Scotland and stayed at the Kildrummy Inn. The owners, Darren and Sylvia were so accommodating, and the food was fabulous. It was a great home base for day trips to historic castles and the whisky distilleries and prime location for fly-fishing."
Pam Lamaster-Millett, AIA, Chicago, IL

· "We had an unbelievable vacation in Friday Harbor, WA in the San Juan Islands. We stayed at the very reasonably priced Discovery Inn and totally enjoyed the whale watching cruises with San Juan Safaris."
Sheryl Kayne

· "I stayed at The Pod Hotel in NYC with my 9-year old daughter for her birthday. We both loved our bunk bed room, which my daughter thought was très cool—each bed had it's own flat screen TV (a big hit as she could watch Hannah Montana and I didn't have to). Also liked the hip lobby, great rooftop bar and that it’s on a nice quiet street. Only drawback: it’s a decent walk to many tourist attractions."
Nancy Besa, Overland Park, KS

· "My husband and I had a lovely spa weekend at the Doubletree Hotel Tarrytown in Tarrytown, NY. Bistro Z, the onsite restaurant is great, the rooms are lovely, good fitness center and pool and an outstanding spa (one hour massage was perfection)."
Lydia, NY

· "This summer I stayed at Meadow Creek Inn in Stanley, ID. As an acupuncturist, I know the importance of self-care for stress relief. I wanted a vacation where I would be taken care of and I found the perfect spot. Included in the room rate ($105 per person, per night) is a 45-minute massage or facial. It was truly the best massage I have had in a very long time with delicious aromatherapy and soothing oils. The Sawtooth Mountain range was our view and every night, we were spoiled with a complimentary glass of wine while munching on an antipasto plate, swinging on the hammocks and entertaining the idea of a hot tub. Each room has darling décor and my only complaint was that there wasn’t a king sized bed."
