The Ace Hotel Rumor Mill: Are LA and Vancouver Up Next?

It seems that our gentle suggestion to open up an Ace Hotel in Chicago fell upon deaf ears: BlackBook magazine ran an interview with Ace Hotels founder Alex Calderwood today, and in it he hinted at the possible next locations for his urban-hip brand of funky hotels. And Chicago was not mentioned. Boo.

LA and Vancouver were mentioned, though — which is pretty exciting, if we do say so ourselves:

L.A. and Vancouver would be great places to build, but there’s nothing specific on the board that we’re aggressively looking to move forward with.

Can we start the rumor mill a-churning now, or should we just go back to moping about how our brilliant Chicago idea was not picked up?

Also, interestingly enough, Mr. Calderwood says of the NYC hotel: "In general, the feedback is almost unsettling because we’ve been getting tremendous, tremendous positive feedback from our guests. I expected more glitches." Well, okay. We suppose you don't call the insane number of delays with the opening a glitch, then. (Zing!) And, um, by the way: Ace New York is going for as low as $97 on Quikbook right now, in case you want to check out what all this hype is about for yourself.

Ace Chicago?

There's been a lot of talks about a hotel at that location for a while now.  As far as I know, there's never been any discussion about putting an Ace there.  Before the recession pretty much stopped new developments dead outside of downtown markets, it was only a matter of time...now we won't see anything until the economy recovers, because nobody can get the funds together to build there.  When funds thaw, it's going to be one of the first places developers look to outside of downtown.

What's eventually going to end up there is going to be a smaller hotel (under 120 rooms, I think), but along the lines of an Ace in terms of amenities.  And that's about what that area could take.  Any more and you wouldn't be able to fill it.  Although Wicker Park is popular, it's too close to downtown to really merit any more.  Developers ARE very aware of that spot, and there aren't any other hotels in the area to speak of. I'd expect to see something in that area within the next 5 years.
