TripAdvisor's 'We Are Not Making This Up' Blog is Still Glorious

We spend a lot of time harping on things we don't like: fugly carpets, opening delays, crappy service and high room rates. But here is something we really, really do like (for a change): TripAdvisor's blog, "We Are Not Making This Up." We mentioned this a couple of years ago, but it's still up and running and turning out amusing nuggets of text and photos from real people that make you lose (or help restore!) a bit of faith in the world out there.

You know, every once in a while you come across a review on TripAdvisor that is somewhere along the lines of, "This hotel is horrible!!!11one!!1 Do NOT stay here!!!1!! NEVER AGAIN!!" and you're like, hmmm, this person is certainly quite distraught — but it's sort of funny, though. But have you ever wondered what happens to the reviews from people who are so distraught (or just so set on telling everyone in the world that the coffee maker was broken) that it was actually not publishable by TA? Enter the WANMTA blog.

Here we have a vast and varied treasure trove of funny stuff that the TA staff plucks from the site and from the TA mailbag that is somewhat glorious, from hilarious management responses to reviews ("we don't have bedbugs, we have fleas and ticks") to funny pics that guests have snapped.

A highlight, from a manager responding to a bad review (presumably involving controversial wall-paint choices):

I make no apologies for the lilac colour in the room....after all the room is called "The lilac room" so what colour do you expect .... I have checked the paint tin and it definitely says lilac not 'terrible lilac'.

To avoid further disappointments, please note that "The red room" is red and "The coral room" is coral. If you want luminous we suggest you book the 'Mark Rothko room' which is painted in bright orange.

And then there is this particularly candid gem, re: open bathrooms:

When they mentioned open concept bathroom..it means that the toilet in the room is exposed...juz a sliding partition to close it up...but the partition cant even be locked...so one can only imagined the horrible smell i have to endure when my husband has to attend to nature's call...NO 2.....

Well, someone had to say it.
