Hey, ever heard of the Inn New York City? Neither had we, really. A quickie search through the HC archives (which go back — way, way back) was fruitless, and racking our brains turned up nothing. Why were we searching far and wide for info about this hotel, you ask? Because, according to TripAdvisor, Inn New York City is the very best hotel in all of the Big Apple. Hmm.

We know TripAdvisor is not always the undisputed bastion of accurate and consistent (or even sometimes real) reviews, and we also know that just because we haven't talked about it doesn't mean it's not good — but really, what makes this the supposed best hotel in all of NYC? Let's investigate.

This place is up on 71st Street. Not a Times Square, tourist-packed hotel, but not exactly in the hippest, most happenin' part of town either — but well within walking distance of many points of interest. According to the not-very-fancy website, the hotel has a two night minimum stay, and additional people in the rooms are $75. A change or cancellation of your reservation will cost you $100 — and your whole deposit is forfeited if the cancellation is less than 30 days out. So far, not seeming so hot, is it?

But! The amenities: a fruit basket, a bottle of wine and a bouquet of flowers greet you upon arrival, "as well as a compelling cupboard stocked with hearty delights to suit all tastes."

Here's the thing, though: the hotel is in a restored 19th century townhouse, and the whole hotel is just four suites. Four. Suites. Oh. Hence the cancellation policies and whatnot.

Regardless, if this sounds like your thing, here's what gushy TA reviewers have to say:

· "In all, I think I can best describe it as like staying in a friends house in one of the greatest cities in the world - it doesn't get much better."
· "They want you to feel at home, but it’s more the kind of home you WISHED you lived in. No service is too difficult – they even washed my small clothes which I didn’t expect. Richard, who has been with the Inn for many years, carried our bags down the spiral staircase for us. Everything you use is replaced daily, so you are never without." (Also: this is the most comprehensive review)
· "This a real neighborhood and by staying here a couple of days you see a delightful side of New York City you can't experience at the big hotels. A good location: safe-clean-quiet, subway station at the corner, restaurants, bakeries, markets, church, Central Park, museums, all within walking distance."

Sound like your thing? Be prepared to shell out for it: $645 was the lowest rate we found, and it was a special "internet rate" down from $725.
