Willard InterContinental Is Good For The Earth But Still Too Expensive For Us

While we continue to ponder the hefty price tag on DC’s very-soon-to-open Jefferson Hotel, another chi-chi Washington hotel has caught our attention. The classic Willard InterContinental received a Conde Nast Traveler “World Savers” award for its commitment to the environment and communities in need.

This is CNT’s third year to give out the awards, which honor global travel companies for their leadership in social responsibility causes. The Willard was the overall winner in the City Hotel category (we guess living across the street from the White House must be inspiring). You can find the rest of the winners here.

The Willard’s “Next 100 Years” program is dedicated to improving the hotel’s social and ecological consciousness. Best practices include 100 percent wind energy, 191 tons of recycling, 37 tons of composting, donated water wells to South Africa and South Dakota, contributions to city’s Anacostia River clean-up, and “adoption” of a local school and park. The hotel has also hosted proms for disabled youth and helped build a DC Habitat for Humanity house.

Of course, all that do-goodery doesn’t come cheap to guests—for the upcoming week, rates start around $299 for a weekend stay or $359 for weekdays. In other words, seems the Jefferson’s $300 opening rates might be on par with its contemporaries.

Deals can be had

My brother stayed there for New Year's and got a great deal. Even if you're staying elsewhere in DC, the Willard's Round Robin Bar is worth a visit.

Worth it

I stayed at the Willard for my 40th bday and it was worth every penny.  Thank God there are still high end properties such as this rich in history.  I gained priority club points and use them at other properties.  If you can't afford it.....
