There isn't a very good track record for hotels that do promotions with shockingly low rates. Remember the Leading Hotels of the World's $19.28 fiasco or the recent Copley Square Hotel $18 birthday rate failure? So excuse us for being a little skeptical about the $9.99 promotion from the Hotel Adagio in San Francisco.

The JDV Hotel is advertising a rate of $9.09 for guests who check-in the Sunday or Monday of Labor Day Weekend (September 6th or 7th) and want to extend their stay over September 9th, or 09/09/09. Just to be clear, the rate of $9.99 is for the night of September 9th. Guests must use code 090909 to book.

Sure enough, we went to the website and plugged in this code for dates September 6 through September 10 and could not get the promo code to work.

The reservations site yielded a rate of $126 a night but once we selected a deluxe king bed, it suddenly switched to saying "Minimum stay 3 nights." This was odd because we already had three nights picked. Then we noticed that September 6 and 7 were suddenly unavailable, or that's what we took the red Xs to mean.

So our faith in gimmicky promotion rates has not been restored but if a hotel is advertising these special rates the best thing to do is get on the horn with a reservations agent. Call the JDV Hotels Hotline at 1-888-717-9667 and let them know the promo code 090909 too. But we've not given up completely on the web. Often times these promotions get publicized before the websites have time to update the reservations system properly. We'll give it another try in a little bit.

Fake Promos vs. Realistic Discounts

Truly tired of these fake promos that are simply put out to grab attention rather actually provide a realistic discount. I actually think these marketing ploys have the opposite affect than what was expected. They end up hurting the Hotels with negative PR & customers. I mean seriously how can a property stay in business with a $9.00 rate?!

I heard of a San Diego GM who through Twitter advertised a real $20 room with no amenities, soaps lotions and limited bedding. Truly the only cost to the hotel was the electricity and labor.

I feel if a Hotel truly just wants to get people in the door, advertise the actual cost of the room and get creative rather than 'bait & switching' the consumer.
