Or rather, we ignored it till we settled down for the night, and noticed a heavy breathing in our left ear. That’s when we decided the room was indeed was haunted, and decided to sleep with the light on. But after a few minutes we realized our ghost was the person asleep in the next door room – the walls were just so paper thin that it sounded like s/he was in our ear. Either way, we had to pop a pill to get some sleep.
What We Liked:
Breakfast is included in the price of your room, and it’s proper yum – sweet homemade bread, and a fantastic egg/green chili combo that went down a treat (Ginny, the owner, has won awards for her cheffy skills). The room definitely looked great, and it’s not every day you get to stay in such historic digs, so that’s a definite plus point. The owners are sweet too – David took it on himself to plot our route for our next day’s roadtrip, and helped us make a booking for the following night.
What We Didn’t Like:
Take it from a Brit who is used to old buildings. It is actually possible to carry out normal bodily functions such as breathing in an old house without being overheard. You just soundproof the walls. But every single old place we’ve stayed in the States has been abysmal on this front. B&B owners please take note – we don’t all travel with Xanax, and we quite like our privacy – that’s why we’re staying with you, not in a dorm, in the first place.
Bottom Line:
Places like this frustrate us – it has so much going for it, but lets itself down on a crucial front. Still, if you like your history and take some earplugs, you might just love it. Our Billy The Kid room was $109 a night.
