Admit it – there’s nothing quite like sharing a hotel with a celeb. And while a live celeb may have moved on by the time you get there, there’s always a chance that, if your star is dead, there may be something of them still hanging around. A good thing in some cases (dead rockstars, we’re thinking of you). Billy the Kid? Debatable. But we ended up staying in a room where he stayed for two weeks when we stopped over in Lincoln, New Mexico, at the Ellis Store & Co.

Room Reaction:
This place has won countless awards for Inns and B&Bs and it epitomizes charming. The room (we got the Billy the Kid room for $109) was just what we expected from an American B&B: a nice big room, a nice old couple as owners, nice olde worlde decor and appalling soundproofing. The room was very atmospheric – with Pony Express-themed stuff around the place, though not on overload – and the bathroom was huge. The bed was comfy, the bathroom was spotless – though the shower was a bit weak – and we even ignored the review on TripAdvisor that said the place was haunted.

Or rather, we ignored it till we settled down for the night, and noticed a heavy breathing in our left ear. That’s when we decided the room was indeed was haunted, and decided to sleep with the light on. But after a few minutes we realized our ghost was the person asleep in the next door room – the walls were just so paper thin that it sounded like s/he was in our ear. Either way, we had to pop a pill to get some sleep.

What We Liked:
Breakfast is included in the price of your room, and it’s proper yum – sweet homemade bread, and a fantastic egg/green chili combo that went down a treat (Ginny, the owner, has won awards for her cheffy skills). The room definitely looked great, and it’s not every day you get to stay in such historic digs, so that’s a definite plus point. The owners are sweet too – David took it on himself to plot our route for our next day’s roadtrip, and helped us make a booking for the following night.

What We Didn’t Like:
Take it from a Brit who is used to old buildings. It is actually possible to carry out normal bodily functions such as breathing in an old house without being overheard. You just soundproof the walls. But every single old place we’ve stayed in the States has been abysmal on this front. B&B owners please take note – we don’t all travel with Xanax, and we quite like our privacy – that’s why we’re staying with you, not in a dorm, in the first place.

Bottom Line:
Places like this frustrate us – it has so much going for it, but lets itself down on a crucial front. Still, if you like your history and take some earplugs, you might just love it. Our Billy The Kid room was $109 a night.
