As the countdown until the end of summer ticks away and people try to cram in last-minute outdoor activities, San Diego's The Pearl is just getting started with its Dive-In Theatre, a weekly swim-and-cinema social. Every Tuesday year-round, the hotel screens a flick onto its 10-by-13-foot outdoor screen that overlooks the oyster-shaped pool.

Between 50 and 100 people show up to see the movie of the week at this retro-looking hotel, which avoids the trendy Gaslamp Quarter in favor of the quieter Point Loma area. The Pearl's been holding Dive-In Theatre—its signature event—since the hotel's opening in September 2007. It's free for hotel guests, but everyone else has to buy a drink at the bar to get access to the pool and lounge. The scene invites lingering, with hammocks, dim lights and a few palm trees. If you want to roll like a VIP, the hotel offers two poolside cabanas (though the movie screen is only visible from one of them) that have a $250 food and bevvie minimum. Food is served until 10 p.m., and bar stays open until midnight.

The featured flicks range from classics to blockbusters to foreign and indie films. Showtime is 8:00 PM. Here are some coming attractions:

Aug. 26: The Deep (1977/123 minutes)
Sept. 2: Fletch (1985/98 minutes)
Sept. 9: An Officer and a Gentleman (1982/124 minutes)
Sept. 16: Point Break (1991/120 minutes)
Sept. 23: Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961/115 minutes)
Sept. 30: Knocked Up (2007/129 minutes)

Even if you opt not to take a dip in he water, the outdoor movies and mai tais might be enough to keep your end-of-summer blues at bay.
