Hippies and Hemp? Not at Berkeley's Claremont Hotel

Say "Berkeley," and what comes to mind are aged beatniks on Telegraph Avenue, politically active Cal students, and hemp-threaded clothing. If you buy into the stereotypes—many of which admittedly ring true—then seeing the Claremont Hotel, Club & Spa's massive, and we do mean massive, resort looming in the Berkeley Hills is something like a luxury curveball. But if you know the Berkeley of Chez Panisse, boutique shopping in Rockridge, and a wealthy, Hills-dwelling clientele, then it's not such a strange sight.

Some of us here at Hotel Chatter are Northern California natives, and have spent many a day and/or night at the Claremont lounging by the pool, taking advantage of spa services, or eating at Jordan's or Paragon Bar & Café. Actually, if you're visiting the Bay Area, it's kind of nice to get away from the ridiculous calamity of Union Square hotels and venture into San Francisco when necessary, the city being a quick BART ride or Bay Bridge crossing away.

If you need a reason to give the Claremont's amenities a whirl yourself, then now is probably the optimal time. Having undergone major renovations recently, including refreshed guest accommodations to make rooms more "California elegant" (personally, we're more excited about the addition of new 37-inch flat screens), they are celebrating by offering a "Get Reacquainted" package. Book a stay starting at $129 per night, get 50% off of parking, and get access to the hotel's 20,000 square foot Club at The Claremont. The package deal is valid through September 30, 2009.

Just think of it as the alternative way of chilling out, Berkeley-style.
