Kilronan House Welcomes Guests with Drunk Cards

On a trip to Dublin recently, we decided to be brave and rent a car. We also decided to shack up one night at a B&B. When we arrived at the Kilronan House in Dublin and didn't see the valet—free parking was a selling point—we pulled our rental into the adjacent driveway. A man from the business that owned said adjacent driveway came out and started screaming while we patiently explained our sitch. Then our concierge/valet/white knight Cormac came out, politely smiled at the screaming man while ignoring his nastiness and parked our car. Talk about service with a smile.

We followed Cormac into the white-pillared Georgian-style bed and breakfast, which blends in nicely with the townhouses on the street. At check-in, we got the rundown of the area and some maps. Cormac also handed us "drunk cards," wallet-sized pamphlets of the B&B with its address prominently displayed, because he knows that even when out-of-towners stay at a classy joint like this, they will inevitably get forget-your-name drunk in Temple Bar.

Room Reaction
Our room was in a townhouse two doors down from the B&B. The room was on the small side, but as elegant as the rest of the building, which was built in 1834, with a big white old-fashioned headboard, soft lighting and flowered bedspreads. The bathroom had a more modern feel with warm brownish-pink tiles, new facet fixtures and a good shower, meaning not one of the cheap European kinds that leaves a lake on the bathroom floor every time someone takes a shower.

Internet Connect
We weren't able to get WiFi in our room, but the lounge offered access for free. The lounge, filled with slightly worn flower-patterned Victorian furniture, was a good place to linger with our laptops while we planned the rest of our Dublin adventures.

What We Liked
The best part of the Kilronan was the yummy Irish breakfast that's included in the price (we spent $120 for two people on a weekday). Many Dublin hotels tout their breakfast but it ends up being a blah spread of yogurt, cereal and more cereal. This was a real-deal meal with choices like eggs topped with salmon and crepes.

What We Didn't Like
The downside of the B&B is that it's just outside of city center. However, it's a few blocks away from the lovely St. Stephen's Green and it sits along a residential block, for those who want a more quiet place to stay. So if you're looking for the bar action, this isn't an easy stumble back to your bed. But if you keep your drunk card on you, you'll be fine.
