Parallelogram Beds and Fancy Dolls in German Wine Country

HotelChatter's Eric Rosen recently spent some time in Austria and Germany. All this week, he'll be rounding up his hotel observations. Any tips, suggestions, questions? Let us know.

Beds can be so boring. Soft or hard. Big or little. In the middle or the room or in the corner. No matter what else they are, they are almost always square (or circular at certain establishments we’ll never admit to having patronized ourselves—those ones that usually come with a mirrored ceiling, too). But have you ever wanted to venture a night’s sleep on a bed of a different shape? A parallelogram, say? We didn’t realize we had this very unique secret urge ourselves until we were shown to the Rapunzel Suite (complete with freaky, spotlighted doll!) of the Märchenhotel Anno 1640 in picturesque Bernkastel-Kues, in Germany’s wine-producing Mosel Valley. Turns out it had just the right angles for some perfect nocturnal slumber sprawling.

Two people makes this bed a little harder to navigate, since you’ve got to angle yourselves so as to avoid space infringement, but once you get the hang of it, it’s kind of nice to have that extra space at the head and foot to let a hand or leg dangle. Just a note of caution: when you’re hurrying around the bed, to get to the bathroom or because you forgot your bedtime book, careful of that final corner. When you’re used to right angles, it’ll get you every time. We have the bruised knees to prove it.

The rest of the small-town hotel is a little less novel, but terribly cozy, situated as it is on a cobblestoned corner lined with restaurants and tourist shops. All the rooms are fairy-tale themed in tribute to the Brothers Grimm, whose stories take place nearby. And yes, they all have dolls. The hotel also boasts easy access to any number of the area’s world-famous Riesling wineries. In fact, you can see the grapevines on the slopes above the village from almost all of the rooms.

We’d suggest leaving your car behind during a stay at the hotel since the tourist-packed streets of the town can be impossible to navigate in summer, and there is almost always confusion regarding the hotel’s scattered hodgepodge of parking places.

In the meantime, we dare you to try the hotel’s other signature guest amenity: the "romantic bath." In a rock-lined grotto on the second floor, you and your companion can enjoy a private Jacuzzi dip while munching on canapés and sipping champagne, or take a rose-petal bath together in the two-person tub on the other end of the suite accompanied by chocolates and wine. This hotel is just full of surprises.
