"We could not reconfigure the lobby or square off any of the corners; the walls even rolled up to become the ceiling plane," [Colleen Neilson, Cole Martinez Curtis and Associates' project executive,] explains. What she and the design team could do was remove the old paneling and mirrors, and add strong design elements such as registration desks done in dark wood and a fuchsia resin top, a stair rail, and cool artwork.
The hotel has attracted families with its proximity to Navy Pier and its large pool, but the Doubletree is doubling down for a different clientele. The Doubletree’s hoping to lure those Gucci-purse-toting shoppers who want to be only blocks away from the Mag Mile action. To help the shoppers build up their endurance to tackle Michigan Avenue, the hotel will debut an on-site fitness center in the fall. Room rates at the spiffed up hotel start around $149.
