There has been a lot of talk recently about the lifestyle of digital nomads -- folks who work from wherever they might roam. HotelChatter has been covering hotel wifi since the beginning, but as we cited in our 2009 annual hotel wifi report times they are a changin'.

It's time for us to start rating hotel lobbies on their digital nomad quotient. We began this series with the Portland Harbor Hotel, but undeniably Manhattan needs a digital respite as well. So next up, we divulge one of our secret places: the Chambers Hotel Manhattan

Hotel: Chambers Hotel Manhattan

Location Layout: A small lobby just inside from the street, with a mezzanine level that is way better, with fluffier couches and a small bar for buying drinks. It's not a huge mezzanine however, so be mindful of other guests and don't make it your office.

Outlets: You might have to reach behind the couch to get to it. So, sparse.

Furniture: Super comfortable with big, overstuffed couches and chairs.

Digital Nomad Tolerance: The only staff that's upstairs is usually the bartender, but a table waiter comes later in the day and you really should order a drink if you're staying long. If you aren't buying during prime time pre-dinner hours, and you're taking up a whole couch, you might be asked to go downstairs. Jason Calancanis once used the hotel's Town restaurant as his office for a day, but now that's closed.

Phone Calls: Only if you can keep it very low.

Overall Mood: During the day, it looks to be 30-something travelers fleeing their room to check their emails on their laptops or read. In the evening, guests stop here for a drink or to get their party together before heading off for a nice dinner and the age range is all over the place.

Digital Nomad Grade: A
Lack of outlets sucks, but the free wifi, access to alcohol, view down into the lobby, and quiet atmosphere although you're in the middle of Midtown is a winner. Best for working during the day, since pre-dinner guests will give you the stink eye in the evening if you're taking up space.
