Let’s take a moment to raise a toast and wax poetic to the booze-fueled beauty that is Sorrento Hotel’s school of imbibing education, Drinking Lessons. Twice a month, the hotel’s Hunt Club will host a cocktail savant for a two-hour, in-depth exploration in the preparation and history of three different cocktails.

Here’s the upcoming August sched:

August 18 (5:30 & 8 p.m.): Ryan Thomas Magarian
President Liquid Relations/Co-Founder Aviation Gin, Magarian’s “chef like” approach to mixology has garnered countless media mentions, including New York Times, Food and Wine, People Magazine, US Weekly, and Men’s Health.

August 24 (5:30 & 8 p.m.): Murray Stenson
Arguably one of the best bartenders in the country, bar seats at Zig Zag Café are at a premium when Stenson’s working Tuesday – Friday nights. Playboy named him one of the nation’s top ten mixologists in 2007.

Upcoming Drinking Lessons will be taught by Jeffrey Morganthaler, Alex Day, Toby Cecchini, Christian Krogstad, Jamie Boudreau, Lucy Brennan, more to be announced.

Another nice bonus, according to Suzuki + Chou Communimedia’s blog:

Web-based cooking encyclopedia Foodista will have staff on hand at all Drinking Lesson events to document the recipes, transcribe them to the web in real time, and create a web-based event out of the proceedings so that people around the globe can take part in the intimate experience at the bar.

Cost: $50 (+ $10 for the quarterly Drinking Lesson recipe chapbook). Sessions are limited to twelve individuals only. For reservations, email: nightschool@hotelsorrento.com. Night School is a collaboration between Sorrento Hotel, Michael Hebb (infamous Portland reject and owner of Pike Street Fish Fry), and an array of culinary, cocktail and creative types.
