Comfy Beds and Pillows Still Top the Must-Have Amenity Lists

After a week of staying and visiting at various splurge vs. steal priced hotel properties throughout Hawaii (in the name of editorial R&D), we experienced accommodations, services and amenities that ran the gamut from unbelievably good values to barely adequate.

As we started delving into the destination wedding article that features the aforementioned Hawaii hotel properties, we took a long hard look at what amenities make us really happy. For us, it’s really all about the bed (we’re still swooning for the king sized slice of heaven at Ko`a Kea Hotel & Resort at Po`ipū Beach in Kauai). We also take complimentary Wi-Fi into consideration when booking hotel stays but if it's free and hardly working then it's not really worth it.

But that's just us. We wondered what other folks really liked or didn't like at hotels. We got some great suggestions about hotel amenities in our recent Hotel Preston contest but we decided to poll some of our frequent traveler friends on their fave hotel amenities. Here’s what they had to say:

· Lisa likes The Curtis Hotel in Denver, which has a board game library, Wii in the lobby, and spontaneous games of Twister with the front desk. She also likes the on-request fish at the Grand Bohemian in Orlando, where you can get a fish for your stay so you won't be lonely.

· Sean is a fan of the outdoor shower. Although, he admits that it depends on where the hotel is.

· For Jeanette, a mini-bar and blow dryers have become standard essentials. For her husband, Direct TV and a steam shower are musts.

· A quality mattress and great linens tops the list for Patti. For her, it’s hard enough to get a good night’s sleep away from home, so a really comfy bed makes all the difference. She also appreciates hotels that cater to pets.

· Mary likes pillows that don't feel like sofa cushions. After that, a really good, knowledgeable concierge, and a comfortable place to sit somewhere in the room.

· Sue takes the mattress and bedding situation seriously, but also likes a full length mirror, iron/ironing board, robe, free WI-Fi and staff that get it. She’s not a fan of some of the small "boutique" hotels that hire gum-chewing kids who chat on the phone with their friends while you're trying to check in/out. For Sue, good service is as important as a good night's sleep.

· Sarah simply loves quality toiletries, like L'Occitane or Aveda. It may seem like a simple thing, but to her, it's sort of like the difference between getting hot bread versus cold bread at a restaurant.

· Sally likes finding chocolate on her bed each night when she returns to the room – high-quality chocolate, not the crappy stuff. She also likes soft, big fluffy towels that have not been purchased from Ikea. Also, she likes having a vent/fan system in the bathroom.

WiFi!

Free WiFi is a must. The sole reason I often choose mid-level properties like Hampton Inns, Hilton Garden, Hyatt Place, etc. when I very well could stay in 4 and 5 star hotels is SOLELY for the free WiFi...it's just that necessary. Yes, I suppose I do sacrifice some luxury and service, but free WiFi should fall into the same category of amenities as cable TV or housekeeping service...you just expect it!

I also really like when big-city hotels have a terrace or sundeck where you can sit and read or have a drink. It's really nice to have a little urban oasis so you are not stuck in your hotel room all the time. The Hilton & Towers San Francisco has a great one!

WiFi/Breakfast/Bathroom TV

I agree that WiFi is a must.  And the thing that boggles mymind is the fact that you can stay at a Hampton Inn or Holiday Inn Express and get free breakfast, but not at nicer hotels.  I also need a bathroom TV...i NEED a bathroom TV.

Oooh...I do like the bathroom TV, too!

Love the tv within the bathroom mirror concept, but do love the TV in the bathroom. Enjoyed this amenity recently in the new cottages at The Broadmoor, but also have fond memories of watching T.J. Hooker in the bathtub wuth my beau at a downtown SF hotel. I think it was the Pan Pacific, but not sure. T.J. Hooker in the tub was the indelible memory.

Hotel perspective...

As the owner/GM of The Clarendon in Phoenix, I can tell you what most guests tell me:  beds, pillows, great air conditioning, free wi-fi, free parking, and an experience that's unique.

We went a little further:  we don't throttle our internet speeds so most people get 4-10 megs/second at all times, not 128K or something that seems like dial-up; we offer free calls, even international calls; and we're installing an amazing new a/c system and don't use trick-thermometers like most hotels.... if you want it to be 60 degrees inside when it's 115 outside, you got it.
