Honeymooners: Skip Cancún and Check Out Cozumel Instead

Where: Cozumel, Mexico

When it’s time to cut loose, fun-seekers tend to head to Cabo San Lucas and Cancún, Mexico. But, for couples seeking a peaceful island honeymoon packed with adventure, Cozumel is the civilized solution.

It’s intimate enough to never feel crowded, yet offers visitors everything from nightlife in San Miguel to miles of secluded, white sandy beaches. Setting it apart from its mainland Mexican counterparts, Cozumel boasts photo-op worthy sunsets, privacy and some of the best diving reefs in the world.

Here are two picks on where to stay:
· Splurge: Presidente InterContinental Cozumel Resort & Spa (pictured, above)
If you want to mix your wedding and honeymoon, this is the place after a recent $25 million renovation. A balance of stone, wood and warm lighting honors the natural environment, creating airy Zen-like spaces and rooms worthy of post-nuptial naughtiness. Wedding coordinator, Carolina Guerra can plan elaborate, fairytale affairs that incorporate Mayan rituals, Caribbean sea-front “I do’s,” and dancing under a soaring palapa hut.
Rooms start at $227 per night.

· Sensible: Ventanas al Mar
Honeymooners who wish to steer clear of cruise tourists should check out the 16-room Ventanas al Mar. Located on the isolated east, windward side of the island, the budget-minded, eco-friendly property operates on wind-generated power. Fall asleep to crashing waves and awake to a delicious (and complimentary) traditional Mexican breakfast. Stay on the fourth floor for best ocean views. And yes, we know those bedroom comforters are dicey but remember, this is a budget stay.
Rooms start at $94 per night. (Just a note: some of the hotel's website was under construction but you can make a reservation request online.)
