Survey Says: People With the Dough to Stay at Four Seasons Are Happy

The economy has put everyone in a bad mood. From the banker dudes who had to downgrade from the company-covered Ritz's to (gasp) Marriotts and such, to the families who wisely made the most of one double room instead of booking a separate room for the kiddies — things in the industry have changed because of the downturn, both on the guest's side and from an operational standpoint.

Today, this year's J.D. Power and Associates 2009 North America Hotel Guest Satisfaction Index Study was released — and it had a few surprises. Mainly, this one: after two years of claiming the number one spot, Ritz-Carlton was bumped below Four Seasons in both the overall satisfaction index and the luxury segment satisfaction index, rankings that were compiled after 66,000 hotel guests rated their satisfaction with their stays.

According to the results — some posted over at LATimes.com — Four Seasons guests actually spent a little bit more than RC Customers; 10% more, in fact. So, uh, conclusion: the wealthy people are still happy with their hotels.

The rest of the top-dogs, per JD Power:

· Upscale: Embassy Suites Hotels (for a third consecutive year)
· Mid-Scale Full Service: Hilton Garden Inn
· Mid-Scale Limited Service: Drury Inn & Suites (for a fourth consecutive year)
· Economy/Budget: Microtel Inns & Suites (for an eighth consecutive year)
· Extended Stay: Staybridge Suites

Other interesting tidbits: awareness of "green" programs "has a strong impact on overall hotel guest satisfaction." Satisfaction, on average, came out to about 160 points higher among guests who knew about their hotel's green programs.

Another thing to note: people don't like W all that much. It's ranked second-to-last in its segment. Hmm.

Question: will Four Seasons still be top dog next year if all these concierge phase-out rumors turn out to be true? Just asking.

    Drury?

Has anybody on here ever stayed at a Drury? How do they differ from Hampton Inn (the second leader in the segment)?
