So we had to book a couple of nights in LA this week. Where to start? So many hotels to choose from, so little money to afford them was the general obstacle we came up against. Being fans of Andaz London, we were up for trying out the WeHo branch, but we lacked the $196 to do that.

So we went the Hotwire route. In the hope of scoring the Andaz for less, we asked for hotels in West Hollywood, where we found a 4 star for $121. We booked it for a night, thinking we could find out which it was and come back for more if we liked it.

The email came through – it was the Chamberlain (pictured above). It looked lovely, and if we’d booked it through the hotel website, it’d have cost us $195. We were happy.

Of course, when we went back to Hotwire to book another night, the only four star listed cost $118. And it wasn’t the Chamberlain. But it was the Avalon, so again, we’re not sad. After all, it's part of the same family. Although booking through the hotel would only have been $17 more. Not such a bargain.

The moral of the tale? Hotwire is good, but next time we’ll take a leap of faith and book 2 nights together. Much as we like checking out different hotels, we’d have preferred to stay put.

4 star?!

I would say the Avalon and Chamberlain are 3.5 star hotels. At least that's what comes up when I google them. Who decides the star ratings at Hotwire? I found the Chamberlain on www.hollywoodluxuryhotels.com for $194 and you know the hotel you are getting. I found the Andaz for $183.

i'd give it four

from where i'm sitting - in my suite at the chamberlain - i'd definitely give it four stars. it's pretty fine...

Hotwire and smoking

I am brand new to Hotwire. I got a very great deal at the Crowne Plaza just outside of Portland OR for $56. However after I did it, i kind of panicked a little because I have asthma and I remembered that I had no say over smoking rooms (I think smoking should be banned in h/motels rooms but that is another story). So I called them and she told me I would have first priority for a non smoking but is this what you do- do you call the hotel and ask for non smoking and what are your chances of getting it? It is really nice but that could be a real problem- I one time stayed in a smoking room and I had to get up and stay outside because it made me sick.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
