Hotel Advertises Twitter Account on Billboard. We Should All Quit Now.

July 17, 2009 at 1:31 PM | by | Comments (5)

Not to be the Regina George-ish types of the hotel Twitterverse, but this mess has officially gotten out of hand. A hotel has just sent around a press release to announce the fact that they are now advertising their Twitter account on a billboard. Did your head just explode? Don't worry about that — because we're pretty sure the world's about to end, too.

Last week Dover Downs Hotel & Casino, whose Twitter account we refuse to link to, posted a billboard along Route 50 near Washington, D.C. "instructing passers-by to 'follow' the company" on Twitter. Guh.

Per the press release (yes, a press release):

Dover Downs Hotel & Casino began using Twitter in the beginning of June and as of this writing the company has over 370 followers and has "tweeted" (updated their profile) over 800 times.

To further connect with Twitter community, Dover Downs Hotel & Casino will host the September edition of the Delaware Tweetup at a restaurant in the hotel. The Delaware Tweetup is a gathering of Twitter users from Delaware for networking and charity fundraising.

No. Just no. That's it; we should all just quit Twitter now.

Aren't we in a recession?

A billboard? Really? For their freaking Twitter account? C'mon.

I love reading HotelChatter; keep up the good work!  Also really like @doverdowns' creativity using a billbord to advertise its twitter address.  One of my favorite parts of social media is the creativity it unleashes.  You see @GMGoneMad?   Or @LeeOdden tweet just now on @enthusem re: "printed" tweets?  Long live creative, zany innovators.  Have a wonderful weekend.

I created a twitter account to promote the other twitter account.

So what?

I don't really get the fuss about this. Nobody would question if a hotel ran a commercial promoting its Web site. Putting up a billboard promoting a Twitter account is the same thing. Touting Twitter via other promotional avenues will be old hat in a couple years.

Props to Dover Downs for getting out ahead of the curve.

ASmallWorld for Hotel Marketing

I have never been a fan of Twitter advertising for hotels, with the exception of a) building some hype or b) fostering old/existing guests.

And as a small hotel owner, I gotta say that Facebook isn't much more effective. In our research these two social media giants did very little to generate new bookings. One exception to this general "social media ain't workin for hotel marketing" however was a network called A Small World. It's kind of like a glamorous, invite-only version of Facebook.

In our report, we show that a few tactics used with ASW did indeed generate bookings. As things stand, my hotel probably gets 2-4 reservations a month off the network: nothing outrageous, but I'll take it if it's free.
