W Sets a Date for London Opening; Shame About the Location
June 1 2010, that’s the date set for the opening of the UK’s first W hotel in London. We in the capital are very pleased – we like to think that we’re hipper than Istanbul or Barcelona, for a start, and are slightly peeved that Starwood has chosen to grace our fair city with a W after those two.
The only problem with it – and it’s not because we’re bitter – is the location. Leicester Square in theory is nice and central, but in practice, it’s grim. As lovely as we’re sure the hotel will be, we worry that no amount of Bliss smellies or 350 thread count sheets will make up for the trails of spilt beer and bodily fluids that cake the hood of an evening. The hotel’s neighbours? A grubby steakhouse, and the tacky Café de Paris club.
It will have to be pretty good to rise above the tack around it, but we have high hopes. Let’s just hope it opens on time with none of the SoBe travails.
