A rooftop pool at a hotel isn’t exactly unusual in sunny Los Angeles, so it takes more than your average cement pond with a view of the shimmering downtown skyline to get us excited. With a nightclub name like Altitude, though, the amenities at the SLS Beverly Hills’ pool did have us reaching for the sunscreen (non-pore-clogging, of course) and rummaging through our closet for that cute bathing suit we bought to show off our summer gym bod.

Unlike most other hotel pools we’ve patronized over the years — where you have to strain your neck to avoid seeing guys in fedoras and speedos (at the same time!), plug your ears to drown out the bad techno music, and resist ordering those neon cocktails getting everyone into the “party mood” — the sixth-floor Altitude seems to be a tranquil oasis on one of L.A.’s busiest streets, La Cienega.

The glass noise screen around the deck is fashioned into enormous gilt picture frames, giving you whimsical glances of L.A.’s hidden vistas. And since we know you crave a little privacy from your sunbathing neighbors, the deck is broken up into different seating areas punctuated by huge urns. If that’s not exclusive for you, try one of the cabanas.

Don’t want to ruin that expensive hairdo in the big boy pool? Slip your feet into the shallow reflecting pool, or take one of the lounge chairs positioned in the water and grab a piece of fruit off the smiling iron pig sculpture that stands watch in the middle of it.

Now for the fun stuff: Though the pool is only open to guests of the hotel, you can also access it when you use the hotel’s Ciel Spa — and you can even munch on chef Jose Andres’s delicious food between treatments. Then again, why even bother going to the spa; you can just get mani-pedi’s poolside, or have a deep conditioning hair treatment from Christophe before heading down to the salon at the end of the day to get a rinse and a blowout before embarking on your evening plans.

Even relaxing by the pool, it’s nice to know you can multi-task.
