There's been a lot of confusion in recent weeks about whether or not The Jane Hotel will be getting a rooftop bar and whether or not there is a liquor license on the property. But with the opening today of the hotel's ballroom, we can assure you that yes, you can drink here and you will have plenty of space to do so.

The Jane Ballroom is just a grand name for an expansive bi-level lobby bar. There is a narrow bar on the first level that's tucked away from the larger sitting area, giving it an intimate feel especially as its lined with fancy seat benches. Directly above that is another bar, complete with small tables and chairs and more sofa seating. This bar also overlooks the sitting area of the ballroom and from up here, you are nearly eye to eye with the giant weathered disco ball hanging from the ceiling. (It used to hang in hotelier Sean MacPherson's house in Los Angeles.)

The Ballroom is where we imagine everyone cramped up in those micro-hotel rooms will be hanging out most of the time. A projection screen is even built into the ceiling, assuring that there will be entertainment from time to time. Last week, the space was used for an event for the new Kate Winslet movie, "Away We Go" which was sort of ironic since this hotel was the place where the survivors of the Titanic stayed after being rescued from the doomed ship. And we're all familiar with Winslet's break-through movie, Titanic.

The place feels very much like MacPherson's other hotel, The Bowery Hotel, except on a much, much, larger scale. In other words, it looks and feels like an old European estate (or a "mansion in decline") and indeed the place is stocked with antiques and art from across the world but most of the furniture is new. (It just looks old.)

Also, this time around the Jane Ballroom will be overseen by new partners in the Sean MacPherson-Eric Goode fold. Carlos Quirarte and Matt Kliegman, the operators behind The Smile on Bond Street, will be in charge of the Jane Ballroom. And for those curious about the old Socialista space, when we were there, construction crews were at work turning the space into a cafe. For now, it's just drinks only in the Jane Ballroom.

    titanic

jane wasn't where they stayed before the sinking (remember ship was on maiden voyage from england), it was where the survivors were put after being rescued from the debacle.
