Though sounding more like a luxury lodge in the wilds of the Yucatan Peninsula, the Hotel Maya is planning to open in Long Beach early in July after a $20 million renovation by Joie de Vivre Group.

The property now sports 197 ocean- and garden-view rooms with private balconies, designed as a “fusion of Latin American beachside resort and modern Southern California style.” That means airy guest rooms decorated in creamy and earth tones, with a few splashes of color on the walls and pillows.

The new hotel will also house a seafood bistro called Fuego, a fitness center, and a business and events center right on the waterfront. For your leisure time, there is a heated lap pool and Jacuzzi, and a water canal where you will find floating cabanas to while away your time.

The hotel is laid out in a resort-style complex, with five separate buildings throughout the lush grounds. Normal rates will run between $159-$249, but to celebrate the opening, starting July 15, and continuing through the end of the year, the hotel is offering a special “Mayan Journey” Package for $149 per person including a room, breakfast, three-course dinner, parking, and water taxi to downtown Long Beach. Oh, and don’t forget the free daily sangria tasting at 5:00pm.

When you get tired of lounging by the pool and need to reinvigorate, have the resort arrange any variety of activities including sailing classes, bike and Segway rentals, volleyball, and salsa lessons. You can also plan daytrips to Catalina, a tour of the Queen Mary, and the Aquarium of the Pacific. The hotel also makes a convenient stopover for an overnight stay before hopping on a cruise departing from Long Beach.

Want to feel good about taking a luxury getaway? Joie de Vivre hotels partner with local organizations, and donate $200 per year per room to them as part of the chain’s You Can Make A Difference program. Hotel Maya’s philanthropic partner is End Abuse Long Beach, which provides domestic and child abuse support and shelters throughout Long Beach.

Doing good while living it up. It doesn’t get better than that.
