When a ship gets launched, it gets a bottle of bubbly smashed on it. When it’s a hotel that happens to be built in the shape of a ship sail, it gets what we’re thinking is a lot more than a bottle of bubbly doled out to the people attending its “ceremonial event” – which is what was going down on 19 May at the W Barcelona, to celebrate the completion of the sail-shaped building.

Unfortunately, although it’s ready on the outside, it must be looking pretty rough internally, because they’re planning on opening October 1st – despite the date originally being down for 2008.

Anyway, as an opening offer, they’re dealing a free upgrade, two cocktails, breakfast, a Bliss Spa gift set, and VIP access to the rooftop bar, which is going to be run by London’s finest Ignite Group. They’re also doling out a complimentary appetizer or dessert if you dine in the hotel restaurant, but we’re betting most guests will be out on the town for their dindins. Anyway, the choice is yours for €299 ($422, or £261). Valid for stays between October 1st (or whenever it opens!) to February 27th of next year.

Hi there,
This will be indeed a world class Hotel. I have visited at least 12 W's through out the US and some international. When I come to BCN I usually stay at Le Meridien or Hilton and if you put the Ritz Carlton in the same package that is it for Barcelona hotels.

The rest some 250 hotels are managed locally and the rooms are small with no amenities and certainly no international training. OH!! And by the way, at exorbitant prices

These folks (owners & managers) will have to get up to speed real quick with upgrading there rooms (new design) a new set of amenities, new rules of international management and they need quick to hire  a top of the line Global hotel operator(s) to get them out of the way of what appears to me is a freight train coming at them.
Wait!! I heard that Mandarin, and Four Seasons are quietly right behind the W - WOW
Barcelona will never be the same. It will compete with the best global markets.

Opening

Is the hotel on schedule for the Oct 1 opening date? If so, do you know if there is anything special scheduled that weekend. I arriving in Barca on Oct 1, but i'm a bit hesistant to book for fear of delay.
