For a long time, Venice Beach has been lacking in providing a hip but upscale beachfront stay. The only choices were hostels or those luxe beachfront hotels in Santa Monica at $400+ a night. Sadly, some of us just don't have that kind of cash. Nor do we want that stuffy, big-box hotel experience. And you can forget about having us spend a night in a hostel.

Thankfully, JDV Hotels have taken over the old Marina Pacific Hotel in Venice at the intersection of Pacific Avenue and Windward, giving us a hipper, happier, cleaner and more affordable place to stay on the beach. It's also got a new name: The Hotel Erwin.

We were able to tour the new hotel earlier this week. There were some guestrooms open but the hotel was still putting the finishing touches on its lobby area and its cafe, which will be called Hash (opening July 3.) However, all systems are a go for an official opening tomorrow which is when all the guestrooms are expected to be finished and the hotel's amazing rooftop area will open.

The rooftop, which is called High (heh), will open for drinks and light fare starting at 5:30pm. The views of the Pacific Ocean and Venice Beach up here are unbelievable. We don't think there's another rooftop like it in all of the Westside. The new must-have for hotels, a DJ, will also spin tunes as guests kick back on the chaise lounges.

Inside the guest rooms, you'll find big beds and comfy bedding, flat-screen TVs, balconies, Lather toiletries, dumbell lamps, funny "Do Not Disturb" signs and funky artwork from local Venice artists. If you can splurge for a suite, you'll also have a living area with a sofa bed pull-out, kitchenette and a Sunglass Honor Bar so you can borrow shades when you hit up the beach. If you end up taking them home, they only cost $5.

The Hotel Erwin will have complimentary wireless throughout and the business center will have two Apple computers to for guests to use. There's also a fitness center on-site but spa services will have to be arranged in-room through a local spa. There's no pool but the beach is literally steps away. Parking is $25 a day. Room rates start at about $180 a night. In the peak summer season that could jump up a bit more.

One more hotel perk? From the rooftop you can see actress Anjelica Huston's massive Venice townhouses on the next block over.
