It doesn’t take long to realize that El Silencio, much like its sister property Hotel Punta Islita Beach Resort, is sought out by people who take responsible (and relaxing) travel seriously. Al fresco yoga classes, nearby waterfall hikes, and as-deep-as-you-can-handle aromatherapy massages from masseuses Isel and Laura coax everyday stresses from El Silencio’s guests.
At night under a sky full of stars, the sounds of birds, bugs, and rushing waters heard from the private whirlpool found on the terazza of each free-standing suite lull worn-out travelers to sleep.
Yet while guests can find luxury amenities and service at nearly ever turn, El Silencio prides itself on maintaining the highest of standards and without compromising its social and eco responsibilities.
Here are some cool eco-facts about the property:
• El Silencio is a 100% carbon-neutral property.
• A tree is planted for each and every guest. Once planted, it’s tagged with the guest’s names and photos of the tree’s growth progress are sent to the guest.
• Each guest is assigned a personal eco-concierge who helps coordinate activities, spa services, attends to impromptu laundry needs and whatever else necessary for your stay.
• El Silencio supports its local community by hiring and training 85% of its staff from nearby communities.
• Its restaurant has its own organic garden and sources much of its other organic ingredients locally. Don’t miss the locally fished trout and tilapia.
• There are recycled fiber lighting fixtures in the main lobby, as well as the planters, wall scones, and soap holders all crafted from local wood.
• Instead of using toxic cleaning supplies, El Silencio cleans its endless footage of floor-to-celing windows with a vinegar and water solution.
• El Silencio composts and produces very little garbage.
• Rooms do not have television or internet access, encouraging "communion with nature."
• The hotel is working to produce its own energy. It’s slated to produce 125 KVA shortly, while total consumption estimates at 165 KVA.
Former President, Bill Clinton once touted Costa Rica as the most sustainable country in the world, and there’s a definite feeling of being part of some far greater good that extends through every interaction within Costa Rica. Ambitious eco-efforts throughout the country strive for complete carbon neutrality by 2021 with El Silencio setting a strong example.
Nightly rates include lodging in deluxe suites, three daily á la carte meals, personal eco-concierge, daily snacks, one guided hiking tour per party and all taxes and service charges start at $210 per person, based on double occupancy. Single room rates start at $365.
