Hot to trot Parisian hotel alert: we’ve just found out about the Pavillion de la Reine, on the truly scrumptious Place des Vosges in the gorgeous Marais district.

Its 54 rooms have gone through a bit of a transformation this year; it’s just reopened after a refurb, and although we don’t know what it looked like before, it’s pretty fly now.

Unlike some Paris hotels we’ve stayed in, there’s not a hint of overblown. Instead, it’s kind of smart-yet-homely (even a bit rustic) all bundled into one. No two rooms are the same, but you could get a four poster bed, exposed beams, frilly wallpaper or stripy chairs, depending on which you go for. We reckon it’d be a bit like staying at a rich auntie’s house: there’s a library with comfy chairs and an honesty bar – only with 24 hour room service, wifi and a concierge instead of a trusty butler.

You’re paying through the nose for it though: rack rates start at €380 ($526), and go up to €950 ($1315) for a suite. But there are some decent offers, too: from July 9 till August 31 with the Summer Smart Rate, you can get B&B, free upgrade to a superior room, parking space, access to the spa and “a VIP welcome”, whatever that is, for €290 (instead of €528 – you have to stay two nights, but that’s not exactly a chore in Paris).

Or in case you’re worried about shrinking exchange rates, their guaranteed dollar rate from $400 a night sounds pretty good. Now excuse us while we try not to take offense that they don’t do the same for the pound.
