Though it had a “soft” (that is, an unannounced) opening on May 12, Zimzala Restaurant at the Shorebreak Hotel in Huntington Beach is now open for business...and for press.

Part of the Joie de Vivre family of hotels that we seem to be writing about more and more these days, the Shorebreak is meant to be a surfer-chic haven of beachside relaxation in one of California’s premier surf destinations. Rooms have paintings of surfers, seascapes, and, of course, killer views of the beach and pier, not to mention a few surfboards lying around.

In keeping with that ambiance, Zimzala features a menu of seafood and Cal-Mediterranean specialties. James Beard Award-winning Chef Joyce Goldstein helped Chef Vincent Muraco create the menu, and we’re told its dishes span the cuisines of 22 Mediterranean countries. That’s quite a trip!

The restaurant is actually on the second level of The Strand, which is adjacent to the Shorebreak Hotel, but an easy stroll for guests. Its space includes a bar, “living room” lounge, an exhibition kitchen, main dining room, private dining room, and patio spaces all designed by De Lisle, Philpotts & Staub Interiors. We can’t wait to try a meal there.

In the meantime, here’s your bit of surfer trivia: “Zimzala” means “one who finds peace with the sand between his toes.” Groovy, dude!
