Is TripAdvisor Removing Some of Those Fraud Warnings?

June 15, 2009 at 9:07 AM | by Jenna | 3 Comments

Last week, we were pretty excited when it was brought to our attention that TripAdvisor was stepping in to referee certain hotel reviews submitted to the site that appear fraudulent or, you know, like good ol' PR copy posted by folks affiliated with the property to manipulate rankings.

But now maybe TA is stepping back — Christopher Elliott asks on Twitter:

Tipster says @TripAdvisor has quietly been removing "attempted to manipulate" warnings from selected reviews. Anyone else seen this?

Hmm — could TA be backing down on this? We did mention we thought it was possible that these big ol' red warnings splashed across the top of hotels' pages may serve more to remind visitors about the way the site can be easily manipulated; maybe they agree?

Anyone seen this? Let us know.

    possible problems ahead

It seems possible Tripadvisor is taking a risk, indicating a review might be fraud, and it's not.  Surely, many reviews are fraudulent - its too easy to write a fake review.

All it will take is a few outspoken reviewers who assert their reviews were not fakes, and Tripadvisor may be subject to a libel lawsuit by accusing the hotel of falsely writing a fake review.

Just my opinion  Im sure a lawyer will tell me why I am wrong - but you dont have to be write to file a lawsuit.  You just have to feel wronged.

    They need to do something

i liked the idea of a warning that some reviews might just be pr.  if that doesn't work, why don't they just take down the reviews that are thought to be fake? is it any different then a blog not posting comments that go to far?
Also, I think that this should be done both ways, there are a lot of horribly negative reviews written by a hotels direct competition (or others with an interest in hurting the specific hotel) that are baseless.
