Cornwall will be raking it in this summer. Not only are the Brits going hard for the whole staycation thing (even though it still costs way more to stay in the UK than it does in Europe, and the weather ain’t exactly on a par), but it’s just been named top UK destination by a survey commissioned for Travelodge as well.

Not that we’d necessarily recommend you stay in a Travelodge if you make it down there (and well done if you do, because you’re looking at four hours and counting on the train), because the point of Cornwall is that it’s cute and tiny.

One of the most obviously charming places is St Ives. Its chocolate-box setting and extraordinary light have made it a big deal for artists (though the branch of London’s Tate Gallery there isn’t much cop).

And one of the cutest places to stay in St Ives is the Primrose Valley Hotel (that’s it on the left of the photo). It’s an old Edwardian B&B with nine rooms and a suite right on Porthminster Beach itself (on the outskirts of town). Luckily, though, it’s been completely gutted since its guesthouse days, and the rooms are bright and beautifully furnished. Go for one with a sea view and avoid the suite – it’s sexy enough, but it’s a bit dark and doesn’t have a good view, which kind of defeats the purpose of staying on a beach.

The owners are absolutely lovely, and even lovelier is their green policy: not only do they use organic smellies, but they have high recycling rates, organic local breakfast, and a donation to the Marine Conservation Society is included in your room rate. Right now, doubles start at £125; not cheap, but neither is St Ives.

Cuter than 7 kittens in a sack

As I was going to St Ives, I met a man with seven wives. That's probably because the rail journey takes so long no doubt, that would be 4 hours if there are no delays. But worth the journey whatever it takes, you can't go wrong in St Ives, one of the nicest seaside destinations in England.
