Expedia's New Hotel Sale Won't Blow You Away, But You'll Find Deals

June 1, 2009 at 9:17 AM | by juliana | 1 Comment

Expedia is certainly working hard to win us over. Last week, they dropped the cancellation fees for hotel reservations and today, they are launching their biggest hotel sale ever.

Expedia.com's massive sale offers discounts of up to 30% off its everyday rates at more than 5,000 hotels in more than 350 destinations worldwide.

We immediately began searching hotels in New York (there's 107 participating in the sale) and found the Hudson Hotel for $146 a night, if you book three nights. However, searching three weekends in June, the lowest rate we could find was closer to $186 a night.

In Vegas, several off-strip hotels were featured at seriously discounted rates. Closer to the Strip, the Hooters hotel was listed at $29 a night, for three nights. On the Strip, Caesars Palaces was more expensive at $112 a night, Paris Las Vegas at $90 and Treasure Island was $79 with the fourth night free.

We glanced over at the European offerings and found the discounts to be a bit less. In Mexico, however, quite a few hotels were listed as 50 percent off their average prices.

Overall, we weren't blown away by the sale offerings but it does seem that if you book air and four nights hotel together you will get a much better bargain. You must book by June 30 with travel completed by July 30. And yes, you will probably have to wade through two pages of unnecessary advertisements for even more unnecessary travel add-ons before you can actual complete your purchase. If Expedia really wants to get on our good side, they would drop this hassle as well.

    The sale that was'nt

I noticed in many city's that the price they claimed was 205 or 30% off was not really a sale because other sites like Oribtz and Travelocity had the same price for a standard rate with no promotion indication. Who cares what they mark the name of the rate. if it's available for one night on one site it is probably the same on others.
