With over 200 wineries, Paso Robles is quickly becoming one of the country’s most important wine regions. Until now, though, the lodging options in the area have either been ultra-luxe or bargain basement. Located right off the historic town square of Paso Robles itself, the Hotel Cheval is a moderately priced new option for a weekend of Central Coast carousing and quaffing.

The hotel has only 16 rooms, arranged around a courtyard with an outdoor wood-burning fireplace. There is also a Library where you can unwind from a tough day of drinking, as well as a Parisian-style zinc-topped bar shaped like, what else, a horseshoe.

The California country-style rooms all have California King beds, Temple Spa bath products, 37-inch LCD flat screens, and complimentary WiFi, in addition to other luxury goodies like 400 thread count sheets, spa robes, and fresh-baked welcome cookies.

Normal rates start at $375 for a classic room and $425 for a deluxe, but if you book a mid-week stay (Sunday-Thursday), you can get rates as low as $225 per night. The only drawback is that you have to call the hotel directly at 866-522-6999 and ask for the special rates since they are not available through online booking.

Racing Tip: The hotel's Belgian draft horse, Chester, gives guests complimentary carriage rides through the city park and to dinner on Friday and Saturday evenings.
