Do Amsterdam the Adult Way at Lute Suites

Let's get one thing straight: we're definitely not party poopers. But sometimes, the idea of Amsterdam grosses us out a little bit. Mainly because it makes us think of grubby boys feeling up the red light ladies and sucking on the whacky-baccy till their grubby little eyes fall out.

So although we'd normally scoff at the idea of staying outside of town, here's one place we might actually quite like to retreat to at the end of the day: The Lute Suites (there are seven of them) in Ouderkerk, a cutesy village outside the capital.

Cutesy's not the word we'd use for the suites, though; they're exceptionally stylish with mosaics galore, high ceilings and funky carpets (the giant rose in suite 4 could provide hours of fun after a day spent inhaling the café culture). Each has their own front door, too, which sounds good for shy types bringing back new friends.

It sounds pretty fun, too — the only page in english on the website talks about the "Hogwarthian magic" with which owner Peter Lute has grown the place from a restaurant (he's a local chef) in a 17th-century factory to the rooms on top.

It'll take you about 15-20 minutes to get there from Amsterdam, but, if you have a little longer and want to go native, you can get there by riding along the river Amstel on a specially constructed bike path. How very civilized.

At the moment, rooms are going for 285 euros ($382) and up, though that does include WiFi. You also get a "wine cabinet" in each room — your very own wine and champagne bar. Which sounds even more civilized — except you have to pay. Easy now.
