Confirmed: A Week of Quarantine In a Hong Kong Hotel Is Not Awesome

This morning, we were perusing the ol' headlines and noticed a very special one out of Hong Kong that read, "Quarantined guests at Hong Kong hotel get free accommodations." Well, um, yeah — we would assume that the 300-or-so people holed up in the MetroPark Hotel on a seven-day quarantine (due to a confirmed case of swine flu in a hotel guest) wouldn't have to pay for their rooms.

And as awesome as seven free nights in a pretty nice hotel might sound, rest assured that the quarantined guests are not having the time of their lives. Today's Wall Street Journal ran a dispatch from a guest on the inside of the hotel, who calls the seal-up her "seven-day 'life in prison.'

Actually, aside from the fact that she couldn't leave the building at all and had to miss out on a friend's wedding, it's not quite a prison-esque lockup:

The government policies in Hong Kong are really very good. They work fast and are very quick to follow up with any extra requests. On the first night, we all had the same food for dinner. Now we can choose from over ten meals and 10 beverages. You have to say it’s very considerate of them. We also have been given any other necessities in a timely manner.

In addition, the Hong Kong government also sent us apology gifts, including two boxes of chocolate, two sets of Calvin Klein underwear and two baskets of fruit! Four days to go, and I believe time will pass quickly.

Chocolate, fruit and underthings? Hmm. If we were the ones sealed up in that hotel, we'd be asking for filet mignon, fine wine and La Perla underthings for our troubles. Just saying.
