When Your Prom is Held at Hollywood Roosevelt, It Makes Headlines
If your prom was held at The Hollywood Roosevelt, you'd think it would end up being kinda...oh, we don't know: West-Coast-Gossip-Girl-swank. A place that is known as a playground for celebs a.k.a. the "popular kids" of the adult set has gotta be kind of an intimidating setting for kids, no? And prom is kind of insanely intimidating as it is, right? Wouldn't you think that some horror stories would come outta a prom held at the Roosevelt?
Well: not the case. Quite the opposite, actually: the result was one of the most heartwarming prom stories ever. When the Fairfax High School prom was held there on Saturday night, an openly gay teen, Sergio Garcia, was crowned prom queen "in a campaign that began as a stunt but ended up spurring discussion on the campus about gender roles and popularity."
The AP reports:
Days before the dance, Garcia told fellow students that he was "not your typical prom queen candidate. There's more to me than meets the eye."
He also promised that he would be wearing a suit on prom night, but "don't be fooled: Deep down, I am a queen." And he made good of that promise Saturday, wearing a gray tuxedo topped off with the prized tiara.
Haha, aw. Rock on.
In somewhat unrelated news: does anyone wonder what the vibe was like at the Roosevelt that night you know, with hundreds of sixteen-year-olds gallivanting around the hotel all evening while other patrons knocked back pricey martinis? Kinda weird, no?
