More Swiss Family Robinson meets Sound of Music than stereotypical Utah ski lodge, Zermatt Resort in Midway, UT (about 50 minutes from Salt Lake City International airport and minutes from Park City and Deer Valley) is multi-tasking with its social media efforts. The Rocky Mountain resort has a blog and posts regularly to Flickr, Twitter (@Zermatt_Resort) and Facebook.

We especially dig the resort’s creative use of Facebook. The photo and event updates and frequent comments are well worth a look see for curious travelers, but unlike a lot of Facebook pages that are skewed to a strictly out-of-town market, Zermatt Resort’s efforts also appeal to the local clientele.

This week (and just in time for spring), they gave the first two Facebook fans who called the Spa at Zermatt and mentioned the update a free “South Seas” airbrush tan.

They’re also building their online fan and followers base by giving away dinner for two to Schneitter’s, the resort’s restaurant and winner of the 2009 Best of State Buffets, to every 250th new fan (they were at fan #354 as of post time). Hello, Prime Rib Buffet!

Our fave promotion, though, is the naming of the Zermatt goats. Six lucky goats are the envy of the local agriculture community with cushy summer jobs eating the weeds along the back hillside at Zermatt. Name contenders for Goat #1 are truly fabulous: Do, Dasher, Leder-Hosen, Goldie-Horn, Alpine, Edelweiss, and Liesel. Entries can be submitted via Twitter or Facebook, and winners win gelato from the Bakerei & Eis Eurpoean bakery.

The verdict is still out on the pretty lame prize, but the promotion in general scores big points on cleverness and cuteness. Our money is on Goldie-Horn.
