HotelChatter Checks Out the New Le Meridien 'Brand Experience'

Last week, we hit up the just-opened Le Meridien Dallas North to get an idea of the fly new look that the whole LM chain's going to be getting. Yesterday, we gave you a look at the lobby; today, a full tour.

To remind you: for the last couple of years, Starwood has been hard at work to develop a powerful, more modern and solid identity to roll out across its Le Meridien chain. The first "prototype" property to be outfitted with the new, uniquely Le Meridien designs and goodies was the Le Meridien Dallas North, with a guest experience that's supposed to stimulate all the senses. That means sounds ("sounds specifically created for Le Meridien by Sony/BMG"), smells (you're supposed to encounter a scent called LM01 created by perfume designer Le Labo), and tastes (a breakfast program designed by chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten) that are uniquely LM.

What We Liked
This particular property's rooms were massive — the video tour above is a standard room. The full-sized sofas were fantastic and surprisingly comfy, and the Graham Downes-designed room decor was chic and modern with little techie touches like the swivel-happy flatscreen, the sleek coffee machine, and the tech panel just above the desk. Also, that wallpaper (or mural) on the wall behind the couch is actually the Paris cityscape. Cool.

What We Didn't Like
We understand that the hotel is brand new and that there wasn't a whole lot goin' on early on a Friday afternoon, but the whole room had a bit of a colder feel to it — maybe it was the grey walls and carpet, but the hotel — particularly the room — seemed just a tad more institutional than homey to us. Also, we (sadly) didn't encounter any of the fabled scents of which we had heard — the place totally had a new-carpet smell.

Finally, we know pink is not for everyone. We liked it — but our positive 'tude about pinkness is fierce and well-documented. Still, the rest of the chain will not have the same color scheme and setup; this is just the prototype for the new "brand experience," not necessarily the mold from which all Le Meridiens will be cast.

    chintzy bathroom

looks like this was converted from a lesser brand and it doesn't look like they did much to the bathroom. looks like it was a marriott or similar just a few short months ago.

    I agree

Yes, the design looks ok, but really standard chain trying to look "cool"...  The program and idea behind the initiative is good, in theory, but throwing some strange wallpaper and modern chairs together simply doesnt cut it.
