We mentioned previously that DC’s venerable Jefferson Hotel would be reopening this summer after a two-year renovation (read: total gutting of its interior). Yesterday we got a tour of the place, and we’ll admit: We left more than a little impressed.

Though the Jefferson is still very much a construction site, the guest rooms are mostly finished and look, well, lovely. Gone is the formerly stodgy Federalist look, replaced with a fresh “Parisian apartment” aesthetic intended to evoke Jefferson’s love for France. Each of the 99 rooms (20 of which are suites) has its own theme — we saw the equine-happy Agrarian suite, with the orange and slate gray motif pictured, as well as the Butterfly suite, which glowed with gold and coppery brown.

Lest you forget for even a moment the hotel is dedicated to Jefferson, many rooms feature TJ quotes on the wall and custom-designed toiletries concocted with oils extracted from flora that grows on Jefferson’s Monticello estate.

But here’s where it gets exciting. Though the Jefferson is undeniably an upscale, classic hotel, intended for Washington dignitaries and the like, they’ve taken the care to work in some nice modern touches. Like free Wi-Fi, for starters. And room tray sensors that alert housekeeping when someone sets a tray in the hall. Flat-screen TVs are tucked away in elegant custom-designed armoires. And a four-pipe ventilation system ensures guests can regulate room temperatures just so, regardless of season. In other words, the Jefferson is all about the sorts of touches you probably won’t notice, but will appreciate nonetheless. Because while they’re unapologetic about their steep five-star prices, they’re also determined not to “nickel and dime” their guests.

The Jefferson won’t give an official opening date beyond “summer 2009,” but they divulged Aug. 15 as the date they’re hoping to start taking reservations. Opening rates will run through Sept. 30, from $380 for classic rooms. After that, normal rates begin from $550.

Stay tuned. We'll have details on the restaurant and bar next week...
