Have it all with a healthy dose of history at Hotel Boulderado. Celebrating its 100-year anniversary in 2009, guests still ride the original 1908 Otis elevator to rooms in the main building – rooms #302 and #304 are reportedly haunted.
The friendly staff, many of them many decade-long and multi-generational employees are fiercely loyal to the Victorian hotel’s historic roots – famous guests over the last century have included Helen Keller, Ethel Barrymore, and Louis Armstrong.
Its frilly Laura Ashley-ish décor may be dated for some (don’t expect Frette linens, a fancy mini-bar or modern bathroom amenities), but rooms are clean, charming and downright comfortable. The new wing lacks some of the character of the old wing, but is still worth a stay. Concierge is generous with upgrades when available – don’t hesitate to ask.
Guests are down-to-earth and convivial, eager to share their Boulderado tales over a local microbrew, such as Avery Brewery’s Salvation, at the hotel’s always-hopping Corner Bar.
To celebrate its centennial birthday, the landmark hotel is offering a “Boulderado Birthday Package.” Rates start at $255 a night and include accommodations, a Hotel Boulderado History book, a 100-year hotel gift, birthday cake and valet parking. Regular room rates start at $189.
