It's nice to see this whole 'going green' thing isn't just a passing trend. The brand new Hotel Indigo San Diego Gaslamp Quarter is slated to open August 1 and has eco-ambitions beyond reusing the bathroom facecloth.

The 12-story hotel's plan is to be the “first sustainably built hotel in San Diego” (pending LEED certification) which includes design features like their "eco roofs." To help reduce heating and air-conditioning waste and filter storm-water runoff the hotel installed native plants and shrubs to the ninth-floor terrace and 12th-floor rooftop. (So far their aren't any of those Al Gore inconsistencies like a rooftop helipad to fully negate their green attempts.

Hotel Indigois delivering on other eco responsible amenities. There's an onsite recycling program that does the recycling and composting on the roof (EW?!), eco-friendly paper and recycle corn plastic for food and beverage containers, and priority/discounted parking spaces for guests arriving in low-emitting and fuel-efficient wheels. The green goodness isn't just for guests. Hotel employees who carpool also get preferential parking. Those who bike to work have (for the fresh smelling sake of everyone) access to showers.

Besides nailing the green peg, the hotel also scores nicely in social media. Guests who become a Facebook fan of "Hotel Indigo San Diego Gaslamp Quarter" will be in the running to win two tickets to a San Diego Padres baseball game and win a complimentary night at the hotel come August. (The drawing is at the end of May.)

Otherwise, rooms start at $199 a night before tax while daily valet parking clocks in at a devastating $32. Clearly, it's better to take that bike.
