WSJ Finds Montage Beverly Hills to Be a Little Shaky

The Wall Street Journal's "Finicky Traveler" spent the night at the Montage Beverly Hills, the urban sibling to the Montage Laguna Beach that was just (finally) completed in Beverly Hills — and she found things to be a little bit, er, up and down, if not kinda shaky for the super-steep price (which, cause o' the economy, had been reduced to $395 nightly from the originally-planned $480 - $595).

Though she was impressed with the sheer size and design of the place — 201 rooms done up in a building that has a Spanish Colonial revival design, with its 20,000-square-foot spa with 17 treatment rooms, salon, fitness center, and yoga and Pilates studio — there was some, uh, room for improvement during her experience.

A few highlights (or lowlights): she mentioned the dining room "could lighten up a little" (the word "pretentious" was thrown around in there too), poopy views (and an unimpressive courtyard her Garden Suite looked out onto), and a comfortable but a bit too high-tech room (she had to call on staffers to help her figure out how the lights, drapes and sheers operated).

Some good things: the room had a "pop-up panel with several electrical outlets, unlike most hotels where you have to crawl under the desk or unplug lamps to power your various devices" (we love that) and the bathroom had a cool built-in TV by the tub, plus a rainfall and a regular showerhead in the separate shower. Howevs, there was a "not-so-great scent of mildew in the water closet, which we mentioned to the front desk" — she found out later that the relative new-ness of the building led to a water buildup due to underuse of the rooms.

Also, the air conditioning wasn't working initially, and had to be fixed by some maintenance staffers — and a massage therapist was a no-show, an irritation that was swiftly soothed with a 90-minute complimentary alternative treatment courtesy of the management.

All in all, the reviewer seemed somewhat pleased — but the whole experience wasn't quite up to snuff. And, like us, she wonders how this place will fare in the BH luxury market as the time wears on.

    I disagree, this is Sparkling.

I recently stayed at the new Montage Beverly Hills, and I have to admit that i usually wait before I try a new hotel, but not in this case. The rooms are perfect, spacious, practical, amazing balconys, hands down the best Spa in the area, the pool has an amazing view of the hills and the service is something you expect from a seasoned hotel. Well it was all there and more, the rate was so reasonable that I stayed for 3 more nights, and I am glad that i did. Lunch at the pool was very good. Oh yah and they drive you in a Maybach what luxury.
