The Five Best Awesomely-Cheesy W Hotel Taglines

May 13, 2009 at 2:07 PM | by Jenna | 14 Comments

Somewhere in this world, it is someone's job to come up with creative, catchy and varied taglines to describe and promote different hotels within the same chain. And on hotel websites across the Internet, these sparkling marketing copy gems are on display to accompany pretty pictures and hotel descriptions, lending a bit of pizazz and style — but our favorite taglines, by far, are found on the W Hotels website.

Come along with us on this international tour, guided solely by awesomely-cheesy W Hotels taglines, won't you?

1. W Washington D.C.

By George, a Capital Time!
Calling all style senators - the Congress of Cool is in session.

The Congress of Cool! Heck yes it is in session.

2. W Hong Kong

Enter the Dragon
In this eastern Manhattan, energy streams like hot tea at dim sum where W Hong Kong sits among modern splendour, oriental markets and colonial cool.

Really, "colonial cool" is the best takeaway here.

3. W Dallas

W Does Dallas
W Dallas - Victory will charm you with sensory indulgences wrapped in cowboy cool.

Oops! We all know that "Debbie Does Dallas" is a dirty film, right? And that "cowboy cool" is probs cooler than "colonial cool?" Ninjas are coolest, but we can think of no synonym for "cool" that lends itself to the alliteration thing here. (Also: no ninjas in Dallas.)

4. W Fort Lauderdale

W Holds Down the Fort
Come play where you can twinkle your toes in the Atlantic and yacht into the sunset amid private islands.

Alright, the "W Holds Down the Fort" is just brills, no?

5. W Barcelona

Of Fashionistas and Fiestas
Where Miro meets the Mediterranean, medieval quarters showcase modernista masterpieces and Catalan cuisine complement caliente clubs, the W Barcelona is an avant-garde icon rising above a stunning waterfront in Spain’s most dynamic and stylish city.

This is like plain marketing copy that has undergone bedazzler treatment — and it's awesome.

[Update]: We've gotta give an Honorable Mention to W Hoboken; a W exec told WorldHum that the W Hoboken is aiming to be known as "The Ladies Man of the East Coast." Tee-hee.

What's your fave awesomely cheesey hotel tagline? By all means, talk about it.

    'A sensory pilgrimage'

    At the W Boston:
"Where New England warmth meets cosmopolitan cool..." I think "cool" is mandatory in the cheesy W copy

    HotelChatter Trendsetter Patter Matters

Wow! I was just informed of this article and gathered enough aplomb to reveal myself as the (W)riter of the above (W)itty litanies. While my (W)ork accounts for about 65 percent of all W marketing copy, I'm incredibly penthouse floored and elated that all five taglines you've chosen belong to the output of me and my laptop, fueled by the Cubs game on TV and/or Springsteen on the stereo.

Thanks so much for the recognition -- you have given me much renewed inspiration to sharpen up all my pencils extra hard and continue winging the whimsy of W with pinpoint precision (not just drinking the Kool-Aid... there! Managed to stay on message by sneaking "cool" in in some form!). Juliana is right to point out that "cool" goes with W -- of course it does. Another icon of W writing is the proliferation of W words, wink wink.

While I adore all the taglines you enjoy best like my own quintuplets, I thought I'd sign off with one of my own favorites, a little one from W Athens - Astir Palace Beach: "Greece Is The Word."

    AWESOME

As a fellow word nerd who feels on top of the world when a brilliant headline comes to mind (which does not happen often), I salute you. :)

    your secret?

some people swear by iced lattes, others by bottles of chardonnay and frequent sips of brandy: what's your secret for coming up with so many (w)onderfulplay on words?

    The funnier the better

One hotel we stayed at had a real funny tag line "join the world's biggest sleepover" and I thought we were going to a pyjama party

J + J, oh, believe me, I know the feeling. Writer's block starts with a capital W, too! I wish I could be cool as W and say I'm triggered by red wine like Hemingway, but unfortunately, during the day I'm a tea drinker (love loose leaves). What can I say... I just go word-tripping and live and breathe enough of the W for this stuff to become my Wernacular. No secret I can bottle up to sell, just gotta be a big wahoo with ideas bouncing off like a whoopee cushion. Thanks so much for the nice words!

These lines make me want to stop staying at Motel6

These taglines are a lot of fun.

I remember noting one at a Florida resort hotel that was cheesy, but that hotel has since changed ownership.

I think it was the Grossenverger or something like that in Orlando.

    Anyone remember?

    Forget the taglines--where's that pool?

My eye was drawn to the photo of pool and wall behind it--much more interesting visual than the taglines!  Where is that, anyway?

    Nice Leadership = Cool Name

I didn't realise that they were given such freedom with their tags! Freedom = great results, clearly! Good leadership there.
