Abu Dhabi Loving Some Hi-Tech Helix Design

With Abu Dhabi still trying to outdo big bro Dubai, the Gulf city has come up with a high-tech hotel that beats anything we've seen before. The Helix Hotel, whose winning design has just been announced, is not only bizarrely modern but it's also using technology to be environmentally friendly.
The shape is uber-modern, with a helix-shape floor space surrounding an empty core. Apparently this means that from inside the hotel you'll be able to look both up and down to see various public areas, and that includes looking up from underneath to see the rooftop, glass-bottomed swimming pool.
The odd exterior is made up of something they're calling GROW panels, which will help the hotel make use of solar and wind power. There are also retractable doors which will be programmed to allow cooling breezes through to replace some of the air-conditioning, and there's an indoor waterfall using ocean water to add to the cooling system.
This 208-room hotel doesn't have an opening date as yet, but since Abu Dhabi's economy hasn't been too badly affected by economic woes there's no reason to think we won't be able to stare up at that swimming pool sometime in the next couple of years.
