Does Anyone Actually Like the Peekaboo Bathroom Trend?

April 8, 2009 at 10:26 AM | by amandak | 22 Comments

The Sanderson Hotel, London.

Call us old-fashioned, but we're still not at peace with the whole peekaboo-bathroom thing. As the NY Times also mentioned recently, the idea of having a shower, bathtub or even a toilet that's viewable from the rest of your hotel room is just not everybody's idea of a great design trend.

The NYT article mentions the Hotel Le Germain in Toronto as one voyeuristic bathroom culprit. In this case, there are blinds to cover the glass wall of the shower but you can't operate them from inside the stall — so if you're not prepared in advance, your bathing habits will be exposed for your companion (who, in the NYT's case, was a 26-year-old woman's father. Eek).

Apparently designers think they're doing us a big favor by upsizing bathrooms and making them prominent (and visible) parts of the room. There are various justifications, including making it luxurious and experiential as well as helping you to orient yourself in an unfamiliar space (a problem we never knew we had).

We'll just wait another decade or so and hope for a big trend in closed, private bathrooms.

    me neither

so i stayed in a hotel over the weekend that had the toilet separated from the shower which was nice. however, the bathroom door to the toilet was like halfway opaque and made of glass.

your hotel roommate could hear everything you did inside there. even if i was with my mother or my husband, i would have liked a fortified bathroom door.

    no me gusta

absolutely not. no thank you. i don't know about everyone else but the majority of the time I travel for leisure, it's with a small group of couples or friends and we almost always double up on rooms, as its works out to be less $$$ overall (since most of us are in the post-graduate poor house!) and the last thing I want my travel-mates to know is whether or not I condition or what the details of my loofa strategy are all about!

    I do

I like it as long as the toilet is separated, but I never share a room with anyone but my wife.  I don't see why a hotel would use open bathrooms in rooms that have more than one bed.  Otherwise it seems to me that these hotels aren't looking for a demographic that shares rooms but rather one that pays up for design.  Whether or not they should be is a different question.

Right? i don't understand that either. I can be handle the silhouette of the person in the shower, but the rest is no business of mine.

    obviously, i agree...

and in fact I've never met anyone who wants this kind of bathroom. So why on earth do so many hotels think it's a smart idea? Next they'll give us an uber-designed rock and call it a bed.

    Ahhhh, No!

There is not anyway I could deal with a bathroom like this.  Maybe it's just me but when I'm in the bathroom I close the door which I'm assuming most do.  Think about it, you have a good one brewing so you grab the newspaper and head to the bathroom to hunker down.  I don't know about you but I could do without being displayed for all to see while I'm in the heat of a heavy one.  Just my opinion..

    noooooo!

Just got back from the Intercontinental Boston, great hotel, except for the peekaboo bathroom. I think what's worse than feeling like you're on display is having to sit in the bedroom while your significant other uses the bathroom, TMI!

I wonder what was wrong with the four solid walls trend?

    Don't mind

The Conrad in Bangkok has the see through bathroom concept.  But they do have electric curtains that totally cover the glass if you prefer and a door that closes.  It makes the room look bigger and airier than a completely closed off bathroom.  We were actually impressed with the design.  We were there 5 years ago.

    Don't care, but lean "no"

I used to be a concierge/front desk guy at The Standard in Downtown LA. Many will know The Standard DTLA as one of the pioneers of this trend. The Medium, Large, and Double Standard categories all had see-through showers which were visible to the rest of the room, making your shower times a presentation on the wall to your companion.

Positioned as a "cool" (read: annoying) business hotel, the lawyers and such of Downtown LA who stayed at the property were not happy about it. Particularly those who visited the hotel for special events and shared with their coworkers were always complaining... and yes, why would you even consider the idea of having a room with two beds have this layout? Obviously, if you don't want to share a bed with someone, you don't want to share an image of your soapy crotch either.

Well, eventually Andre's in-house design team (yeah, two to three people on payroll who just sit around and use their MySpace all day waiting for such a flaw to arise) came up with the BRILLIANT and ground breaking idea to frost the glass half way down. Didn't satisfy the crowd, but it gave us something to say when they complained-- "Oh, but it's frosted glass!"

To make the story even more fun, the glass wasn't even very functional. If someone liked long showers, the glass would get accustomed to a temperature... if they shifted the temperature abruptly or had the AC on high in the room but the shower on hot, that would cause the shower to shatter. This is especially fun when the person was complaining already about the shower's aesthetic but decided to deal with it anyway-- as you can imagine, she didn't pay her $99 room rate.

If we're going to really embrace this peekaboo thing, why don't we really commit to it-- let's just take a crap in a hole in the hallway or maybe have some guy in a beige suit hose us all down in the middle of the street. Screw convention... as long as it's cute, right?

    Oh...

The glass was frosted ONLY in the Double Standard category after the fact.

    i LOVE it!

The toilet room should be private, but the rest being wide open is very sexy for rooms with one bed.  Hotels do need to realize that thier clientel are not one-size-fits all and should consider more private bathrooms for rooms with more than one bed.  Sometimes the best part about staying in a hotel is the cool bathroom.

    it looks good

yes, it do look good but not in my preference to have such tab and toilet so open. but maybe if it just only for me alone, i think it looks sexy but not clear glass.

    Not a fan

I remember the first time i saw this about 3 years ago when a developer was showing me prototypes for his new hotel renovation. I told him flat out more people would be uncomfortable than would think it is cool.

    no, but...

no, but I do think it can open up a room.
In a hotel I stay in in Hong Kong, they have it in the the smaller rooms, though I close the blind when I'm in there....it does make the room seem bigger when on the bed or such

    ugh

This trend drives me crazy and not just because of the peekaboo aspect. I don't want running water and condensation where I sleep.

    come on...

whoever is having issues to show up in the birth suit whilst sharing a room shouldn't share a room.

i do understand that there are corporates that require you to share a room - on these occasions i also don't get the hotel management putting up twin beds into a strip shower - otherwise i love'em!

    Nope

I find it quite scary if I'm honest, and no good if your sharing a room with your mum!

    Not Really...

I would definitely be all for this concept if designers used Smart glass , it is an electronically switchable glass that changes from transparent to opaque with the flick of a switch or the press of a button (or both in some cases)

    not such a good idea

I really don't like the idea even if you travel alone. Of course it look ok, but...maybe I am old-fashioned. austria ski I prefer some small and cosy hotels, like these in the resorts France, Austria, Switzerland...

    Sometimes...

I think it just all depends on when! I mean there are times that I would not want a bathroom like that at all, but other times when it would be kind of cool. I like the idea, but as with everything, there's a time and place for everything. dress up games
