The Boston Globe points to “nickel-and-diming” hotel tactics ($5 to accept a package for you) as well as bigger charges ($50-a-night mandatory valet parking). Other fees the BG mentions: groundskeeping fees; charges for having an in-room safe, whether you use it or not; minibar “restocking” fees, and being charged for the USA Today left outside your guest rooms.
Though much of this might be old news to savvy hotel guests, that doesn’t make the fees any more fun. TripAdvisor posted a poll recently that found 34 percent (of more than 5,000 respondents) reported finding more hidden fees in the past year. Then again, says the BG, while the fees aren’t particularly new, the backlash from customers is likely more pronounced because of the floundering economy, which has made travelers more vigilant.
Bottom line? As always, hotel guests will fare best by asking questions and staying calm:
First, calmly dispute the charges at the checkout desk, where your chances of getting a fee erased are much better than trying later over the phone.
