Barcelona's Eurostars Hotels Replace Your Guidebooks with MP3's
It's one of our permanent travel quandaries to cart around or not to cart around? The guidebook, that is as much as we hate weighing down our bags with 600-pagers, we're loathe to miss any little detail that might improve our limited understanding of a city.
Luckily for us, the Eurostars hotels in Barcelona (of which there are 11 to choose from) have devised a city tour especially for the likes of us. Eight of the hotels are going to have MP3 players, maps and headsets to dole out to guests, starting this month. The players come in five languages (German, French, Italian and Spanish, if you fancy a challenge), the batteries last a heroic 15 hours, and there are 100 points of interest covered, which should do for most weekend trips.
We're quite pleased about this because we used an MP3 guide to Oviedo in January and it worked brilliantly. Also, we read a report about the Hotel Arts offering GPS navigation systems in the Sunday Times last year, and the verdict was not good (Mediterranean sunshine plus LCD screens does not make for easy reading).
If you're struggling to decide which of the hotels to plump for, we like the look of the BCN Design. Apart from the questionable name, it’s got a fab pool, it's right on the Passeig de Gracia (top shopping street) and it looks as designery as its name suggests. Right now, a double will set you back $244.
Now our next quandary: how not to get mugged of our swanky MP3 guide in Barcelona...
