How Are Cancun Hotels Dealing With Swine Flu?

Where: Cancun, Mexico

A very, very interesting article was printed by the UK Telegraph today: apparently, Heidi and Spencer among only a handful of people traipsing around Mexico resorts wearing face masks to protect themselves from swine flu. Hmm.

According to the article, many tourists and hotel guests down in the Cancun area are being met with hotels full of seemingly unconcerned staff and other holidaygoers who seem equally unconcerned (i.e., people are still hitting up nightclubs and whatnot). Per the Telegraph:

As The Daily Telegraph discovered, questions to hotel workers about the virus are generally simply ignored as if they haven't been heard or, if pursued, countered with the claim that it hasn't yet reached Cancun.

Mike Heelan, 29, a recruitment consultant from Limerick, Ireland, said: "I've been thinking that the first time I see a mask here, I'm out. But everyone's so blasé here. We're all in a bubble, thinking it's just happening somewhere else."

He said that when he once asked a concierge at a $288-a-night hotel about the bag of masks on his desk, he quickly moved them under a table and said they were for staff.

Oh goodness. Now, remember: a pretty good deal of tourists who fell sick with swine flu were vacations in Cancun. But it appears that many hotel workers are answering questions fairly nonchalantly, some even insisting that the threat has not yet reached Cancun. Even so, one tourist the Times interviewed said she had only seen face masks on the chefs at the nearby Hard Rock Cafe and on a few of her hotel's housekeepers.

If you've got a minute, cruise on over to the Telegraph to read the full article — pretty interesting, especially considering that this could be either be attributed to the media kind of overblowing this or to hoteliers in the region instructing their staffers to downplay the threat in order to curb the devastating impact on revenue.

Overblown

As a member of the media myself, I'm keenly aware of the media's ability to overblow anything and everything. Swine flu is no exception. You are more likely to die in a plane crash on the way to Cancun than you are to contract and subsequently die from the flu while you are there. Everybody needs to chill.

maybe

But all the same, I put off my trip to that part of the world next month. No need to visit if it can be avoided at the moment.

I was there when it broke out

It was the dumbest thing I saw.  Cancun is more American that Mexico. It is an island with 2 entrances to keep people (locals) out.  No animals either.  We had one fool wearing a mask..
this is the real story :)

The Swine Flu in Cancun

Make no mistake about it. The swine flu continues to exist in Cancun although the U.S. dropped travel advisories regarding visitors to Mexico. It is now July 31, 2009 and we are dealing with the swine flu.

My family and I vacationed there from July 20-26, 2009 at the Dreams Resort & Spa on Punta Cancun. While we had a lovely vacation, our oldest daughter who is 19 years old, contracted the nasty illness. We took her to the doctor and she tested positive for Influenza A (H1N1). We chose the hotel, in part, because the resort's "swine flu free guarantee." She has been prescribed Tamiflu, is quarantined in her bedroom, and her younger sister who is 9, had to be sent away to stay with a grandparent. Our family is cloistered from the outside world to prevent spread of the virus and my husband and I are concerned about our own health. It's a nasty flu and although it looks like she's on the mend, we definitely wouldn't want anyone else to go through this. I blogged about the trip, day by day, and our swine flu experience. http://www.storyconnection.net/blog

We contacted the hotel to see if they will honor their promise of "three free vacations." They asked for confirmation from the CDC (U.S. doctors are no longer required to report cases of swine flu because it is now so widespread). It will be interesting to see if they honor their guarantee.
